SALSA! Module 2 activities introduce the concepts of adaptation and natural selection and explain how these processes work. The following two activities build on students’ knowledge of heritable genetic variation from Module 1 by showing how selection over time of favorable inherited traits results in the adaptation of populations (although these activities can also be used independently of other modules). Both activities use concrete examples of physical traits being selected upon in a population to illustrate how adaptation works. Post-activity discussion questions provide a way to tie together the themes of natural selection and adaptation with genetics and inheritance of the previous module.
Module 2: Adaptation and Natural Selection contains two activities: Feeding Darwin’s Finches and Survival of the Skittles.
