The final SALSA! Module recalls the major concepts of evolution (genetics, adaptation, natural selection, biodiversity, etc.) from the previous modules to explain examples involving medicine and the human immune system. These “real world” examples are intended to close out the SALSA! program with a modern application of evolution. In Module 4 activities, students will learn how the immune system works as a background for further understanding of how pathogens evolve. Examples of evolution in medicine used in the activities include evolution of the flu virus from year to year and the evolution of plants to produce secondary compounds important to modern medicine.

Module 4: Evolution and Medicine contains four activities:

1. How Vaccines Work

2. Shooting Down the FLU!

3. The Immunity Game: Germs vs. White Blood Cells

4. Why You Should Like Plants!
